Live performance is all about honesty and passion. Play it how it feels, at the. And how it feels is defined by the mood of the audience, the rapport with the audience. I play a lot of covers, but I am not a juke box. I select covers because I like them. They bring something out of me, and that's why I play them The audience is the critical ingredient in a live performance. I start up cold, and my 1st job is to make a connection with the audience. Find some energy somewhere and flow it to them. Maybe pick out one person to connect with. To start the fire. As soon as someone flows me a little energy, I channel it right back, thought the music. Then I get more energy, and I channel it back. If we can get this cycle going, being like musical energy conduit, that's the highest high. This is even more true in solo live performance. If I'm playing with others, we can build a fire together. Playing solo, if it weren't for the audience, I might as well stay home. |
